It is a custom browser developed by Respondus, Inc. That locks down online courses and classes offered through various leading online learning platforms. Used primarily at over 1000 higher education and K-12 institutions, the browser is the most trusted product of modern learning institutions, administrators, professors, and students. Provide your students the installation link for LockDown Browser (this link is unique for each institution). If you don't have the URL for this page, visit the training resources within the LockDown Browser dashboard, or contact your institution's LMS administrator. Locate the Lockdown Browser shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. Mac OS users should launch LockDown Browser from the Applications folder. If prompted, either close a blocked program (e.g., screen capture or instant messaging) by choosing Yes, or close LockDown Browser and close the blocked program before restarting.

1. The Mac version of the lockdown browser does not involve an installation. Instead, you simply download the file to the Mac desktop of each computer before test-taking. What is Respondus LockDown Browser? Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking assessments such as tests, quizzes or exams in Online@UT (Canvas) course sites.
2. Finishing the Installation. If installed correctly in Windows, Pearson LockDown Browser will appear in 'All Programs' under the 'Start' menu.If installed correctly in OS X LockDown Browser will appear in will appear in the 'Applications' folder. Click on the 'Pearson LockDown' icon to open. Opening 'Pearson LockDown' will prompt a white window to appear with a single toolbar at the top.

When enabled for your course, you can enable the Pearson LockDown Browser. Until they submit their assignment, students cannot open applications or other browser windows. The LockDown Browser is available only for online tests or quizzes.

For example, when taking a test using the LockDown Browser, students cannot:

• Navigate away from the assignment.
• Open a desktop calculator.

Students can use a basic or a scientific calculator, if you allow this.

Also choose: Restrict tests and quizzes to specific IP addresses.

• Question help — You can edit the assignment settings to allow question help while students are reviewing the test or quiz.
• StatCrunch — The pop-up windows are blocked.

Chromebooks, mobile devices, and tablets —The LockDown Browser cannot be used with Chromebooks, mobile devices, and tablets.

The Pearson LockDown Browser is an application installed on PCs or Macs using the Browser Check. Students working on their own machines are prompted to install the LockDown Browser when they try to take a locked test or quiz.

When administering tests on school computers, Pearson recommends — School personnel install the LockDown Browser before it is needed by students. If this is not possible, you’ll need to make sure that students have the ability to install software on the computers they are using.

1. Go to the Edit Course wizard, Learning Aids and Test Options.
2. LockDown Browser and Proctoring — Select Use the Pearson LockDown Browser in this course.
3. The LockDown Browser might block applications that lab admins at your school need to remotely manage the computer system.

   Select More Options — You'll need to make an exception for this software and select OK to save the 'whitelisted' software.

   • ARDAgent and AppleVNCServer — Remote management on Apple networks
   • UltraVNC Server — Designed for use on PC networks

   If you're not sure which applications to allow, ask your campus lab administrators.

4. After you Save on the Learning Aids and Test Options page — You have the option to require the LockDown browser for specific tests and quizzes.
   • For individual tests or quizzes — Go step 3 of the Assignment Wizard, Access Controls section, and select Require LockDown Browser.
     
   • For multiple tests and quizzes — Go to the Change Settings for Multiple Assignments page, Access Controls section, and select Require LockDown Browser.
5. Choose whether to allow students to use an online calculator — Choose either a basic calculator or a scientific calculator.

If the copied course allows locked-down tests and quizzes, you can import locked-down assignments.

How To Download Lockdown Browser

However, unless the LockDown Browser is enabled in the copied course, the assignments are not locked down for students.

To ensure secure tests, the Pearson LockDown Browser does not work with the JAWS screenreader. To work around this restriction, you can:

• Temporarily remove the locked restriction from the test and have your visually impaired students take the test before the other students begin — The Gradebook entry for the test shows the results for all students.
• Copy the test and remove the locked restriction for your visually impaired students — Delete the results for the copied test and manually enter them into the Gradebook for the original, locked test.
